For years before opening Cinema 16:9, David Titus had made a hobby of collecting pictures and information about historic theaters in the Philadelphia area. Disappointed by the mass-market cattle call experience of the multiplexes and longing for a time when movie palaces were exciting destinations in their own right, David Titus began to work out plans to create a 21st century moviegoing experience that had the personal touch of early movie theaters, the technology of the 21st century, an eclectic mix of great films, and a wide selection of excellent concessions offerings. In March of 2009, David along with his wife, Phoebe Titus, opened the doors of Cinema 16:9, located in the Historic Lansdowne Theater. Cinema 16:9 is a micro-cinema with 2 screens, a total of 100 seats, surround sound and full HD projection. Not only does it show a wide variety of the best independent, foreign and classic films, it also features a series of weekly events like Terrible Tuesday, where the audience gets a chance to mock a terrible film, 8-Bit Warrior Wednesday where for $5 people can come and play classic NES and SuperNES games on the big screen, the bi-weekly Kinderhour where young kids and their parents can come watch entertaining short films and meet other parents and kids, and the 2011 Best of Philly Best Movie Night winner Dinner & a Movie on Thursday nights were people can buy a discounted ticket for a movie then eat a discounted meal from some of the best local Restaurants.

Cinema 16:9 is an independently owned movie destination - My wife, Phoebe and I do all of our programming, select our local and organic foods, and select new additions to our movie rental library. We do work with an outside marketing firm to help us produce our e-mail newsletter with regularity. We don't sell our email list, so you should only hear from us! The Fox Theater is located on the first floor at Cinema 16:9, 35 N. Lansdowne Avenue. The intimate 40 seat theater primarily focuses on mainstream independent films such as and cultural content such as live music and our Opera and Ballet in cinema series with events like The Royal Ballet's Nutcracker. The Fox is often rented for private events - birthdays, private screenings of your favorite movie, travelogs, small business presentations and more.

The Phoenix Theater is located on the second floor at Cinema 16:9, 35 N. Lansdowne Avenue. The 60 seat theater primarily focuses on truly independent films such as and cultural content such as live music and our Cinema Independence Film Series. The Phoenix is often rented for private events. - birthdays, private screenings of your favorite movie, travelogs, small business presentations and more. Another great thing abou the Phoenix is that it has more space and is even more private than the Fox.

When we started planning Cinema 16:9, I was certain we were reinventing the movie theater. We chose to locate to an existing building rather than building an all new structure. By creating smaller theaters, we would cut utility use. By installing the highest efficiency LED light bulbs, the lobby is lit by the equivilent of 120 watt light bulbs, at 1/6th the energy use. Most all of our disposable concessions containers are made of bagasse (spent sugarcane) and are compostable! 90% of our concessions are organic and local, offering you the highest quality food and drink at a fraction of the "food miles" (the distance your food has traveled to get to your plate). So we rely less on shipping. As a digital theater, many of the films we show are streamed to our servers, again minimizing shipping. One of the biggest ecological costs of operating theaters!
