As the customer requesting the event, I understand that Cinema 16:9 has a wide selection of concessions to offer its party customers. Only Cinema 16:9 approved food may be brought from outside. I understand that if after discussing options for outside food with Cinema 16:9, I still bring unauthorized food or drink, I will be charged a $50.00 fee for disregarding this concessions agreement. Authorized customer-supplied food and drink will be listed and signed for in advance of the party on the Concessions Package Sheet.BYOB Agreement
I understand that all drinking is done responsibly of legal age, and Cinema 16:9 reserves the right to ask anyone to leave who abuses the BYOB privilege, or to notify the proper authorities should a minor be found to be drinking alcohol at my event. I understand that a visibly intoxicated guest will not be admitted to Cinema 16:9 if they are. I recognize that public intoxication is a matter for the authorities.Unattended Children/Minors
I understand that Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult, and cannot be left in the theater unattended. Guests of the Party host cannot leave their child at the theater for an event without the express permission of the party host, who becomes entirely responsible for the health and safety of that child while he/she is at Cinema 16:9. I understand that if a child is left unattended or left without the permission of the party planner, Cinema 16:9 is required by law to inform the authorities. Also, I understand and agree that the behavior of all children and minors at my event are my responsibility. It has been explained that without guidance, a small handful of past events for children/minors have become unruly, causing theater damage, or excessive cleaning. I will make sure that is not the case for my event.Theater Damage

Cinema 16:9 is a movie theater, and they are fully aware that there will be spills. However, if a cleaning session longer than 5 minutes is required to clean up after my event, that should be considered excessive, and my credit card will be charged an additional $50.00 for cleaning.Exceeding (Early or Late) Scheduled Event
Baring a technical difficulty or other Cinema 16:9 created delay- If for any reason my event should exceed the scheduled time as stated in this contract, I recognize that my event will be causing a disruption or delay in Cinema 16:9’s regular film schedule. The result of early arrival could be complaints by movie goers of noise in the lobby disrupting their film. Late leaving (including due to excessive messes) may result in the need for cancellation of the showtime following my event, causing the loss of revenue to Cinema 16:9. Should this occur, I understand that my credit card will be charged for an additional $100.00.CONCESSIONS CONDITIONS

What Does 16:9 Mean?
It's movie dorkery actually. 16:9 is an aspect ratio - commonly known as "widescreen." The great thing about 16:9 is that all film aspect ratios fit nicely within it with very little letterboxing. 16:9 optomized the area we had to put up a screen The most width for 16:9 and 21:9 cinema aspects and the most height for 4:3 (almost square) for virtually every classic film made before 1953.
The name is also a nod to Cinema 16, an influencial film society started in the 1940s. Its main focus was on independent and experimental film. One of the goals of Cinema 16:9 is to enable people to explore film as a medium of art and storytelling.
Did You Know?
- No, it's not a reference to the bible. There isn't a book of Cinema... that I know of, at least.
- It's said "Cinema Sixteen Nine"

Common Confusion

Don't be embarassed! We've been open for three years, and heard it all! Here are a few common misconceptions about Cinema 16:9:
- You own the Lansdowne Theater, right?
- So I can rent films and watch them on the computers in the lobby? Or in the theater?
- Cinema 16:9 just shows stuff on DVD.
- I'm glad you're also showing films, but I'd just like one of your lovely quiches.
- I support your business. I made a donation!
- You just show goofy stuff.
- I wouldn't go there... Cinema 16:9 is an "adult" theater.
You own the Lansdowne Theater, right?
No, Cinema 16:9 is an independently owned small business! We don't have the finances to take on such a huge project! Thankfully, the historic Lansdowne Theater is owned by a non-profit organization that was started solely for the purpose of restoring the historic theater. They have been working tirelessly save this building by acquiring grants and your donations. In fact, restoration of the Marquee is set to begin in the first q quarter of 2012!
Cinema 16:9 has been doing it's part by bringing a nightlife back to the theater - and supporting us certainly helps the theater's restoration! But let me just say, if I did have a couple million dollars just sitting around, I know one non-profit I'd like to donate to!
So I can rent films and watch them on the computers in the lobby? Or in the theater?
No and kinda yes. I'll start with the no. Cinema 16:9 is a movie theater, and we actually have theatrical films scheduled daily. In fact, primarily, the computers in the lobby are for guests to browse our rental catalog of over 3,000 films, and to aid in their search for films they want to see.
But...
We do allow our members to sit and watch a rental right here on one of the iMacs in the lobby, but it's limited to 2 people at a time. For $5.00, we'll lend you a pair of headsets and you can use the computer for the length of one film.
In our theaters, you can schedule private parties in advance, pick a film you'd like to watch with friends and we'll secure the right to show it in the theater. And in some situations, we can even accomodate walk-in theater rentals, but the terms of rental change.
Cinema 16:9 just shows stuff on DVD.
Nope. When we first opened we had to create relationships with a number of film distributors. What was available at first was only films that had already been released to DVD and Blu-ray.
It was only for the first 6 months that Cinema 16:9 was essentially a repetory theater. But by the time we had entered our second year of operation, The Fox and Phoenix theaters were playing theatrical release films. We've brought films here straight out of film festivals, and the films we're showing often show in center city theaters too. We've even been the Philadelphia premiere theater for several indie films as well as local films.
Now more than ever, we hear people ask if they can rent the film we're showing instead - now often we don't even know when the DVD/Blu-ray release will finally be scheduled!
I'm glad you're also showing films, but I'd just like one of your lovely quiches.
We don't make quiches. We're a movie theater. We don't have a commercial kitchen, and no matter how tallented a baker/confectioner Phoebe is, Cinema 16:9 doesn't also run the coffee shop. We have Shirley and George to thank for the coffee shop next door!
We do serve coffee, though. We serve a nice darker roast from Cafe Mam. It's organic and fair trade, and as a coffee drinker - our coffee is a smooth, not-so-acidic flavor.
Cinema 16:9 has a nice selection of organic/local sweet and savory foods, meaning that you can have a great dinner with your movie right here! We'll even deliver your food right to your seat in the theater.
Do support our neighboring businesses, too! Come out in the mornings, enjoy food and drink at the Regency Cafe, shop our downtown, or have dinner at one of the local restaurants, but spend your evening with us at Cinema 16:9 - just don't forget to save room for dessert - our confections and ice cream are fantastic!
I support your business. I made a donation!
Cinema 16:9 is a for-profit small business, and has never taken donations. You may have donated to the Historic Lansdowne Theater Corporation, or a local movie club. I worked on this unique business model for 4 years before opening in Lansdowne. My wife and I, with much help from friends and family, built Cinema 16:9. We have worked since 2009 to bring film back to the Lansdowne theater.
You just show goofy stuff.
Cinema 16:9 does show goofy stuff - on Tuesdays mostly. The rest of the time, we bring serious film to our screen. In our second year, Cinema 16:9 screened three films that went on to recieve Oscar nominations. Dog Tooth, Waste Land, and Gasland. We take our film selections seriously. We don't just hire some film buyer to schedule films for us like most theaters. We research, prescreen and approve of each film we schedule in the Fox and Phoenix. Since 2009, Phoebe and I have been hand picking the best and worst films to screen at our theater.
In fact, this January, David and Phoebe will be going to the 2012 Arthouse Convergience, an industry convention with a focus on independent film, and independent film exhibition.
I wouldn't go there... Cinema 16:9 is an "adult" theater.
Wow. Totally false. I'm not sure how that rumor got started, but that's just not true. We don't even have adult film in our rental library! When we first were opening, the former owner of the Regency would tease us about our name, and call us Cinema 69, but that was just joking around. The way I look at it, the fact that this rumor exists means that people are talking about us - we just have to do better to make sure you all know what it is Cinema 16:9 stands for!

SUBMITTING YOUR FEATURE OR SHORT TO CINEMA 16:9's CINEMA INDEPENDENCE
If you would like your film to be considered for exhibition at Cinema 16:9's Theaters, please read our guidelines first to make sure your film qualifies for a theatrical run at our theater. If the film meets the guidelines stated below, fill in the Online Submission Form below and please pay your $10 submission fee below.
or submit a DVD screener and $10 submission fee to:
Cinema 16:9 LLC
Cinema Independence Submissions
35 N. Lansdowne Ave.,
Lansdowne PA 19050
Once your screener is received, it will be reviewed by our programming department. To guarantee proper consideration to all submissions, it can take us several weeks to contact you after receipt of the film. Films are generally booked two to three months in advance.
Although we are dedicated to programming independent and local films we cannot show every film that is submitted to us. We will use the following criteria to select the films we actually end up showing:
- The quality of the filmmaking &/or storytelling.
- The target demographic for your film.
- Current film programming.
- Other scheduling commitments.
Please note that we will only consider films produced in the past 3 years. Also note that Cinema 16:9 will not consider self-distributed feature films that have been released on DVD for more than 1 month.
GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION
Feature Films submitted must be between 60mins and 2hours
Short films should be 30min or less. Short films 7mins or less will be selected to screen before the feature films of the month. A selection from all of the submitted shorts will be compiled into one presentation film.
FEATURE FILMS SELECTION
If your film is selected, we will need a exhibition digital print and a trailer. Both should meet the quality specifications described below. Besides the print and trailers, we will need a couple of posters and (if available) postcards or fliers. A film selected for Cinema Independence will run for at least a week, daily, and on at least one screen. If your film does well, we will be able to extend the engagement. Box office grosses are split on a revenue share basis: 35% goes to the filmmaker (the $10.00 submission fee is returned as well). As a part of the arrangement we will host a press screening to announce the release of the film. Aside from your exhibition materials on loan and a couple of posters, there are no additional expenses for your run with us.
SPECIFICS
1. Exhibition
- We only accept completed films.
- Exhibition Formats - We project the highest quality material. We are a digital cinema - though in some cases we would consider 16mm prints. We do not use 35mm prints. We create HD digital encodes from a video master. The following is a list of acceptable formats for exhibition.
- Blu-ray or QuickTime HD digital files, H.264 (or Mpeg 4) HD file is ideal.
- Files should not be upscaled unless the film was not produced in HD. The only nonHD material we will accept should be the highest quality digital file. We can not use DVDs or low-resolution files for theatrical exhibition. DVDs generally use MPEG-2 low resolution video files, at fairly low bit-rates. These files are not suitable for projection on a large theatrical screen.
- We will not present letterboxes productions.
- Some of the files we have received in the past did not meet our quality specifications which is why we need to test have the exhibition "print" 14 days prior to the scheduled open.
- Three weeks prior to the scheduled open we should receive a high quality trailer- an H.264 (or Mpeg 4) HD file.
2. Marketing and Promotion
- We would like 2 one-sheets (27in x 42in posters) for display at the theater whenever available.
- Low budget and independent films require grassroots outreach and more aggressive marketing tactics than larger budget films. As such, any resources or material you can provide to help market and promote your film will be useful.
- When submitting your film please include a press kit with productions notes, cast and crew credits, a list of festivals where your film has screened, and any reviews and awards your film has received. Also, if any local groups were involved in the production or are featured in your film, please let us know.
