With the screening tonight, I've been busy getting ready. But It's too often that the dedicated fan is left out. To those of you who have joined my mailing list of late, Thank-you and welcome. Film Exhibition - Part Two - A House Divided
Rather arbitrarily, I've decided that today is the day to discuss:
The Screen...
And a little math. In film exhibition, we have an example where economics turns division into multiplication.
As the film industry progressed, more and more film was being created, and Hollywood had a greed for screen. (Darn, that almost rhymed.) Soon, film distributors were pulling exhibitioners aside and saying "Okay, look you want to show my film... I'll let you screen my film... if you also screen this other film." The film exhibitioner now had two films booked in order to get the one he wanted. This became a problem.
And now for something completely different:
Monty Python's And Now For Something Completely Different

We return you now to the blog posting currently in progress.
The film distributors where not booking two great films, they were getting theaters to rent the good with the bad. And suddenly the film exhibitioner was looking at the prospect of a week or more screening a film that no one wanted to see. Not only were exhibitioners forced to show a flop, but they were forced to try to run their business while their revenue dropped of to almost nothing while the film was flopping around in their theater.
So, we come to the afore mentioned mathematical solution to the problem. Let's take one screen, and divide it in half. What do you have? Two theaters. The concept of 1/2=2 created a cinematic phenomenon that swept the nation. Soon there was a sequal- 1/3=3 and then the much awaited 1/4=4 and finally that gave way to the extremely popular 1-1+new construction=multiplex. This mathematical travesty saw the destruction of many of the United States' architectural cinema "one-screen wonders" that had been built in the 1920s.
It seemed this was the only way the "movie theater" could survive. With more than one screen, the theaters could hold onto films that were bringing in crowds, while fulfilling their contractual requirements with the stinkers. This explains such films as, Little Man. Why!? Why?!
So we've been splitting screens, and building multiplexes, and screening a lot of bad film... so, how come we've been stuck with all this bad film?
I don't know.

And Now For Something Completely Different: Film Exhibition
In honor of our upcoming May 29th Regency Cafe Movie Night, Monty Python's And Now For Something Completely Different... I will now discuss something else.
Film Exhibition
Not for the faint of heart, film exhibition has had a long, risky, and illustrious history....
Wait, what is "film exhibition?"
Oh, right... let me start over. Film Exhibition is the act of presenting films to the public. Most people have experienced "Film Exhibition" in some form or other. Any time you go to a Regal Cinema, the Ritz, or the Bryn Mawr Film Institute, you have taken time out of your week to have someone exhibit films to you.
I've been to a movie theater if that's what you're saying, but it's not some sort of exhibition... they have exhibitions at museums and stuff. A movie theater's a movie theater.
Okay... so contemporary "movie theaters" have taken several giant steps away from "Film Exhibition" toward "Keep enough people flowing through the theater to cover the film rental costs, and to sell enough candy, popcorn, and soda to barely cut a profit."
Oh come on, you're talking like movie theaters are an endangered species.
Well.. They've certainly been evolving over the years. Movie theaters started out with Arcades, where for a nickel you could sit down look in a little box, and watch a "moving picture." Soon, the movie theater was born. Where ever someone could put a projector, they could show movies.
Oh, I get it... that's what you do.
Sort of.
So you call that exhibition? Nowadays, I doubt you'll be bringing people in if you're just sticking a projector somewhere and throwing up some folding chairs. That sounds more like "high school A/V club" than exhibition.
Now, now... be nice. However, you're right. That's not exhibition, but that is something I can do. And of course, there's nothing wrong with special events like that. In fact, that could be the only way you'd be able to see some films on a big screen.
So, if that's not exhibition, and contemporary movie theaters aren't exhibition, then what, pray tell, is film exhibition.
Film exhibition is the presentation of film. Real film exhibition is going to mean that the experience of watching a movie is completely unique. You'll say to yourself, wow, not only was that film great, but the theater was fun to be in, the food was great, the presenter was entertaining!
When was there ever such a place?
Ah... the age of the Movie Palace. You didn't just pay for a ticket, sit in the dark, and then go home. The movie palace was a place you could go out dressed well, you could sit in the most elegant building you may ever see, see a variety act, eat food, enjoy drinks... For a while you could enjoy the spectacle of Film.
Well, that's not what they do now.
Nope. And man is that an utter shame.
So... are you suggesting you can bring film spectacle to where ever it is you're screening films this week?
Nope... at least... not yet.

The previously unannounced movie for the Regency screening on May 29th has been struck down by a unanimous vote Sunday, when it was decided that indeed, there is no way to get around the stomach churning bits and naughty bits. Well, it will one day find it's way to grace my screens for certain, but it doesn't work in the cafe setting.
Upon a second glance, I decided that our decision not to screen the film came entirely from the middle of the film, where we were asked to find the fish. It should have been easy to find the fishy - it went where ever I did go.
And so we've come to the end of this post and the beginning of our first ever:

The first person to email Cinema 16:9 the title of the film we've rejected for the upcoming screening at the Regency Cafe wins: Two Free Tickets to the May 29th screening at the Regency Cafe! The deadline to send us the title is May 28 at 5PM EST. So film fans, get your brain cranking!

Good Morning Lansdowne, PA
After an unprecedented night of sleep, I'm feeling particularly perky this morning. So perky in fact, that I'm writing for the heck of it. Today is May Fair over at the Lansdowne Friends School and the First Annual Arts and Crafts show! Well, rain or shine, I'm sure I'll be going over that way soon. Hope to see you all there.
